A shaman is a medicine man, witch doctor, priest, healer, or sage who has the ability to travel to unworldly realms to bring back healing, information, or messages. While the origins of the word are fairly old, the word was only introduced into western culture about 500 years ago. A female shaman is called a shamaness.
