Voodoo (also spelled Voodou or Voudon) is a cultural practice that originated from Afro-Caribbean religion. The name voodoo itself is derived from the world vodun which means ‘spirit’ or “spiritual entity” in Fon (West African).

While there are off-shoots of voodoo that originate from the United States (specifically Louisiana) the religious practices originated in Haiti and can be found all around the world.

Despite its portrayal in popular culture, voodoo has very little to do with evil curses and dolls. In fact, Voodooism is rooted in healing and good deeds and was a source of strength and endurance for African slaves.

It is an oral tradition that has evolved to include a combination of cultural elements that allow people to connect to the spiritual world. These elements are centered around chants, rituals, music, and celebrations. For those who practice Voodoo, it is a way of life that connects to the energy of everything they do.

Voodoo is simply a religion. It can be found in parts of Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas. It is a blend of traditional beliefs and Catholicism. It is a simple yet very powerful faith that is community-oriented and encourages personal empowerment and responsibility. Like anything else, it can be used for good or malice.
