How to Stay Cool, Calm, & Collected with Mercury in Gemini

Are you starting to feel a surge in mental energy? You can thank Mercury moving into Gemini for that!

On April 29th, we start a period with Mercury, the planet of the mind and communications, in Gemini. Mercury is the natural ruling planet for Gemini, which compounds mental energy, restlessness, and anxiousness.

It will be much stronger than usual this time because Mercury will retrograde starting May 10th in Gemini before it moves on to the sign of Taurus on May 22nd. Yet, its initial transit also corresponds with the start of Gemini season on May 20th, giving us an extra dose of Gemini energy!

This extra injection of Gemini energy increases restlessness and anxiety, which are already high with Mercury retrograde. Plus, things can really get two-faced in the sign of the twins if you’re not careful!

So, let’s find out how to keep our cool during this time!

Remember, you can use the free monthly astrology calendar to keep track of the planets in the signs regularly!

What is Mercury in Gemini?

Mercury is normally at home in Gemini because it’s the natural ruling planet for this sign. That strengthens mental energy, and we can be comfortable with being mentally curious, engaging, witty, and flexible.

Gemini is an Air sign, along with Libra and Aquarius, and the Air signs are the signs of the mind. They approach life and situations with their intellect, their reason, logic, and facts.

Gemini is also a Mutable sign, along with Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces, and the Mutable signs are the adaptable, flexible ones. Since Gemini is the sign of the mind, that adaptability and flexibility come with the mind.

Gemini is symbolized by the twins, in part because of all of this energy. At times, that energy can be erratic, frenetic, and hard to pinpoint or control, and we may enter a period like that over the next couple of months.

If you were born with Mercury in Gemini, you’re someone with a quick mind and sharp intellect, and a love of learning. The Mercury in Gemini man is full of ideas and always on the go, while the Mercury in Gemini woman keeps everyone on their toes.

When Mercury is in Gemini, we have the gift of clear thought, objectivity, and mental flexibility. Yes, we can see the shadowy side of Gemini come in during this time frame, but we also have the gift of clarity.

But sometimes, the shadow sides win, especially when Mercury is retrograde. Paranoia can ruin the best day, and many times, it’s not rooted in anything real. This is why a lesson in keeping calm and carrying on while Mercury is in Gemini is in order.

Your Keep Calm Checklist for Mercury in Gemini

1. Be Cool

Gemini likes to keep cool during their everyday activities and come from a place of reason and logic, so while Mercury is in Gemini, try to separate logic and emotion.

Emotion can cloud our judgment, and that doesn’t make Mercury or Gemini very happy. Listen, communicate, and don’t react emotionally. Make decisions based on reason and logic and not emotion.

At the same time, you don’t want to completely ignore emotion. When you do that, you risk going to the extreme with Mercury in Gemini and being devoid of emotion, which can just build up deep inside and add to subconscious anxiety and agitation.

2. Focus on the Facts

When presenting your case and trying to get your point across, try to stick to what is universally known. Facts can be your friend while Mercury is in Gemini.

Some try to create their own “facts,” but you don’t need to get sucked into that kind of thinking. It’ll only irritate Mercury in Gemini and cause more problems you don’t need.

Take time to gather the information you need, and make yourself informed on your positions and arguments. Eventually, Mercury can get on your side in the situation and win the day.

3. Work on Issues Impacting You Mentally

There can be many stressors and traumas that impact your mental abilities, how you express yourself and communicate, how you’re engaging with others, and how confident you are in your ideas, knowledge, and perspective. This would be an excellent time to work on that.

Tackle some of the issues that have impacted you this way, and face them directly. The more you work it out, the more confident you can become, and the fewer mental blocks you may have.

This can free you to be more open and engaging and to use your mental powers to the best of your abilities. This is also a fantastic way of pleasing Mercury retrograde.

In many ways, this may be the most important thing to do with Mercury spending so long in Gemini. The point of it may be, for many of us, to dig into our mental issues and finally come to some healthy, positive resolution.

4. Write Endlessly

When all else fails, write. That doesn’t mean the whole world needs to see it. If ever there was a time when venting on paper was the best medication for your soul, this is it.

Writing is a great way of getting all of the thoughts in your head out of it without sticking your foot in your mouth or getting in a fight with someone. You can write as wonky as you want and just let it flow.

Ground yourself in soothing energy with crystal healing by tucking rose quartz or amethyst in your pocket. Journal until the cows come home, or at least until Mercury leaves Gemini this month.

5. Learn New Things

Another great way to use up your mental energy during this transit is to take time to learn something new.

Mercury in Gemini loves variety, so learning something new helps you do that. You may want to spice up your life with something new.

Try to set aside some time to focus on something new. Maybe a new language, maybe knitting, maybe baking pies, maybe rollerblading, maybe scuba diving, maybe calculus – whatever draws your interest!

You may also want to think about something you’ve tried to learn before and want to try again. Make a go of it in a big way now.

And you can allow the grounded, Earthy energy of Mercury retrograde in Taurus later this month to help you stick to your learning goals.

6. Keep Busy

Being busy may seem like the opposite of being calm, but it really can help. There’s so much extra energy flying around with Mercury in Gemini, and keeping yourself busy can help you use it up (along with writing and learning).

Mercury and Gemini rule your immediate environment, so this can be a time to be more active in your neighborhood or community. This could include focusing your time at your work, local libraries, schools, parks, and anything else nearby. Find creative ways to help out while staying safe and socially distanced to fully exercise your Gemini Mercury muscle.

Staying busy and doing so in your immediate environment can help calm the anxious energy of Mercury in Gemini. It gives a healthy, positive outlet for the excess and helps you feel more connected.

Carry on While Mercury is in Gemini!

Keep this list handy and refer back to it whenever you need to. Make the most of this period, and make Mercury in Gemini work for you.

This transit is only just starting, so work on your plans now. Make sure you leave enough flexibility in them to adapt to anything that comes out of the blue when Mercury is retrograde in Gemini.
