As you become more familiar with different astrological terms, one you may have heard of is “cazimi.”
Don’t worry, you don’t need to be an astrologer to figure this one out! Cazimi is basically just a fancy word for a conjunction with the Sun.
So, What Exactly is a Cazimi?
A planet or body is called cazimi when it’s within 1 degree of the Sun. There are 30 degrees in every zodiac sign, and 360 degrees total for the entire zodiac.
It used to be within 16 minutes of the Sun (there are 60 minutes per degree), but in modern times it’s been lengthened to 1 degree.
The term “cazimi” is a transliteration of an Arabic term, which is a translation of a Greek term, which means “in the heart.” So, sometimes being cazimi is referred to as being “in the heart of the Sun.”
The Sun is powerful, a literal big ball of fire, so anything that gets close to the Sun starts feeling the heat! Once a body is within 15 degrees, this is called “under the beams,” and it can be difficult for that body to handle the intensity of the Sun’s energy and becomes weakened.
Once a body is 8 degrees or less from the Sun, this is called “combust.” The body is essentially burned up by the Sun, and there can be great struggle with using it properly, outwardly, or openly.
Then when the body is within 1 degree of the Sun, it’s cazimi, and instead of burning the body to a crisp, the Sun energizes it, charges it up, and elevates it. If you have any planets in your natal chart within 1 degree of your Sun, that planet is cazimi, and can be a source of power and skill!
When a transit (moving) body is within 1 degree of the Sun, that planet is cazimi, and it impacts all of us at once. Every planet is conjunct the Sun at least once each year, so we experience every planet being cazimi at some point.
Fast-moving Mercury and Venus often conjunct the Sun more than once each year thanks to retrograde periods, which is when they appear to move backward through the zodiac. This means they can become cazimi multiple times each year.
The Moon is cazimi every month thanks to moving so quickly, and the conjunction of the Sun and Moon is when we experience a New Moon each month. The New Moon is powerful, pushing for new beginnings and lighting up what we want to pursue.
The planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are usually cazimi just once each year. This can be an important time of the year for them, and we can focus on developments with each when they’re conjunct the Sun.
Impact of the Planets in Cazimi:
The Moon
When the Moon is cazimi, this is when we experience a New Moon. This occurs roughly every four weeks, and the Sun and Moon align to shine a light on what we want to begin, and gets us focused.
This is a good time to set ourselves up for action each month, and it’s usually focused on what the zodiac sign it’s in rules.
Mercury
When Mercury is retrograde and cazimi, this can be a time for unearthing new information and getting some clarity. The conjunction of the Sun and Mercury retrograde is called the Inferior Conjunction, and is considered a positive part of Mercury retrograde.
When Mercury is no longer retrograde and moving forward, being cazimi can help with important expression, news, and ideas. The conjunction of the Sun and Mercury after Mercury retrograde ends is called the Superior Conjunction, and developments often tie into the Inferior Conjunction.
Venus
When Venus is retrograde and cazimi, this can be a time for clarity and insights, and you can see what you need in order to manage other people well.
When Venus is no longer retrograde, being cazimi can help with utilizing creativity and joy, and connecting with other people more easily. This can be a great time for commitment and loyalty.
Mars
When Mars is cazimi, this elevates energy and helps with taking the initiative with what we want. We’re energized and ready to take action fast.
This cazimi occurs roughly once every two years, and while the Sun makes things clear, Mars helps with having the stamina you need.
Jupiter
Jupiter cazimi occurs roughly once each year, and since Jupiter is the lucky planet, being cazimi can spread good luck to all, and this can be a great time for expansion and exploration.
Jupiter helps us focus on new opportunities, and we can take full advantage of what’s available to us. This is an optimistic and expansive time of year.
Saturn
Saturn cazimi, on the other hand, can be a restrictive time, and we may have more responsibilities to deal with. We have something serious to deal with, and deal with it we must.
Saturn demands we do things the right way and for the right reasons, so we can’t rush into anything, and need to be disciplined with our pursuits.
Uranus
Uranus cazimi highlights change since Uranus is the planet of change. This can be an amazing time of the year to pursue a change for the better.
Uranus may demand we be more independent, innovative, or embrace the unconventional with whatever we do. We can step outside of our comfort zones at this point.
Neptune
Neptune cazimi increases intuition and spiritual energy. We can pursue spiritual ventures and dive into spiritual subjects, and strengthen our intuition.
Intuitive insights can come to us easily, and we don’t have to search for it. Creativity can be high, inspiration can flow, and compassion can connect us.
Pluto
Pluto cazimi can increase passion, and we can focus on getting to the heart of matters, taking control of something, or stepping into our power. We can find what’s hidden and step into the light.
This can be a powerful time of the year for transformation, and we can breathe new life into something stale, and make a quick transformation that can last for the next year.
