Which Planets are Going Retrograde in 2022 & Which Ones Are Not?

Happy 2022! With a new year, one of the things we have to focus on every year astrologically is retrogrades. So let’s explore what the 2022 retrogrades have in store for us and see what the rest of this year will bring!

What will they do for you?

What Does Retrograde Mean?

In astrology, a planet or body (like an asteroid) is called retrograde when it appears to be moving backward through the zodiac. It isn’t actually moving backward. It just seems that way.

Normal movement for the planets is forward, so when they appear to move backward, this throws off that planet’s energy. We’re chugging along just fine, and then everything gets thrown in reverse.

Some retrogrades seem worse than others and certainly have a reputation for it. Mercury retrograde is first among them, and these retrogrades are the times of year we experience all sorts of tech and communication issues (ruled by Mercury).

Mercury retrograde comes most often, 3-4 times each year for about 3 weeks at a time.

The Mercury retrogrades of 2022 will come 4 times, starting in the Air signs (Aquarius, Gemini, and Libra) and moving into the Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn), which is where the Mercury retrogrades will focus for the next few years.

Venus, the planet of love and money, retrogrades about every 1 1/2 years for about 1 1/2 months at a time, and we start 2022 with Venus retrograde in Capricorn. This kicks off the year with some wonky energy!

Mars, the planet of energy and drive, retrogrades about every 2 – 2 1/2 years for 2 – 2 1/2 months at a time.

We were spared from Mars retrograde in 2021, but that’s not the case in 2022 as Mars retrogrades in Gemini for the last 2 months of the year, messing with communication and expression. The year starts and ends wonky!

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Chiron retrograde every year for several months. Their retrogrades tend to be more subtle because of that, unless they are the natural ruling planet of your Sun, Moon, or Rising signs (then you can feel them stronger!).

The Impact of Retrogrades in Different Planets

  • Jupiter: helps us find blocks that have kept us from expanding, exploring, and experiencing life, and pursuing opportunities.
  • Saturn: more restrictive than usual but exposes karmic issues to work on.
  • Uranus: slows down the big changes, which can help with stability and increase impatience and rebellion.
  • Neptune: makes reality more difficult to grasp, and strong intuition becomes more important.
  • Pluto: provides an opportunity to adjust to massive transformations.
  • Chiron: makes us more introspective and reflective so we can remove blocks to healing.

The Sun and Moon are the only two planets that don’t retrograde.

Your Guide to the 2022 Retrogrades

So, when are the retrogrades of 2022 coming?

Here is the full list of the 2022 retrogrades, which includes when they start and end, the locations in the zodiac they start and end at, which signs are most impacted, and an idea of what to expect. They are listed in order of when they begin!

Venus Retrograde: December 19, 2021 – January 29, 2022

Starts at: 26 degrees Capricorn

Ends at: 11 degrees Capricorn

Signs most impacted: Taurus, Libra, Capricorn

So technically, this Venus retrograde starts in 2021, but it’s in full effect for the first month of 2022, so it had to be included! It comes entirely in the sign of Capricorn, ruler of responsibilities, so there can be extra responsibilities for some, especially in relationships, and there can be more scrutiny for those in power.

There can be setbacks and delays with our goals since Capricorn is the ruler of our goals, and we can feel like we’re off track, not making progress, and lack focus or motivation.

It can be a great period for focusing on old goals again and taking second chances. There’s actually a lot of energy for that in 2022.

Mercury Retrograde: January 14 – February 3, 2022

Starts at: 10 degrees Aquarius

Enters Capricorn: January 25, 2022

Ends at: 24 degrees Capricorn

Signs most impacted: Gemini, Virgo, Capricorn, Aquarius

The first Mercury retrograde of 2022 starts in Aquarius, and this will be the last time for some years Mercury retrograde will impact Aquarius. This can mean that Aquarius issues from the last few years come full circle, and we can wrap things up now that help us with our dreams and future.

Mercury retrogrades back into Capricorn on January 25 and ends the retrograde in Capricorn. The Mercury retrogrades of 2022 are moving into the Earth signs, and we start to reflect, revise, and redo anything involving our goals, our direction, and our responsibilities with this retrograde.

The retrograde ends conjunct Pluto in Capricorn, and this can stir up anything we have hidden deep inside and let it burst out. We may fight over power and control, and it’s strong energy to transform, especially of anything that has been around for a long time and is getting stale.

Pluto Retrograde: April 29 – October 8, 2022

Starts at: 28 degrees Capricorn

Ends at: 26 degrees Capricorn

Signs most impacted: Scorpio, Capricorn

This retrograde has come every year for over a decade with Pluto in Capricorn (but with Pluto moving to Aquarius in 2023, it’s not for much longer!). Pluto in Capricorn has been responsible for major transformations in politics and governments and the structures we’re building.

The retrograde slows down the transformations to give room for adjusting and gives us some time to reflect on what has come to pass to put together a better plan for the future.

2022 is the final year for Pluto to tour Capricorn in full, so in many ways, we’re wrapping things up when it comes to the major transformations of the last decade. The 2022 Pluto retrograde can help with understanding and reconciling.

Mercury Retrograde: May 10 – June 3, 2022

Starts at: 4 degrees Gemini

Enters Taurus: May 22, 2022

Ends at: 26 degrees Taurus

Signs most impacted: Taurus, Gemini, Virgo

The second Mercury retrograde of 2022 starts in Gemini, and like with Aquarius. This will be the last Mercury retrograde impacting Gemini for some years to come. The Gemini issues that have popped up with the Mercury retrogrades in the last few years can come to a close, come to a head, and reach a conclusion.

With Mercury being the natural ruler of Gemini and Gemini being the sign of the mind, while Mercury is retrograde in Gemini, our focus, communication, and expression aren’t just off for this retrograde – it’s completely wrecked!

It’s important to be careful with our words and make sure we’re really listening. Communication needs to improve and open up.

Mercury retrogrades into Taurus on May 22 and ends its retrograde in Taurus. Mercury retrograde in Taurus can impact our values, confidence, and stability, and we can feel extra stuck, extra stubborn, and extra irritated.

We may lack energy and motivation to get moving, so we stay stuck in place yet can’t stop complaining about it. We may be inflexible and need to open up more to other possibilities. Otherwise, nothing changes for the better.

This is great energy for reconnecting with the moment and learning to slow things down. If you’ve been going at warp speed, this retrograde may be a reminder that you’ll miss out on life going that fast.

The end of this retrograde in Taurus may trigger the June 16 Lunar eclipse in Scorpio so that it can kick up a lot of emotional energy at the end, and there can be extra fights. We need to tread lightly and be more considerate.

Saturn Retrograde: June 4 – October 23, 2022

Starts at: 25 degrees Aquarius

Ends at: 18 degrees Aquarius

Signs most impacted: Capricorn, Aquarius

This Saturn retrograde comes fully in Aquarius, and we can start focusing on issues and blocks that have kept us from creating the future we hope to have. There may be some karmic lessons waiting for us to learn.

Lessons can be a challenge to learn. However, it’s important to learn them in 2022 since Saturn exits Aquarius in 2023. We’re coming to the second half and moving to the finish line, and final lessons that need to be learned may come crashing in.

The more we avoid them, the harder it can be to learn them, and the harsher Saturn can be on us. Be open to learning how to embrace your individuality in a healthy way, how to have hope, and how to create the future you dream of.

Neptune Retrograde: June 28 – December 3, 2022

Starts at: 25 degrees Pisces

Ends at: 22 degrees Pisces

Signs most impacted: Pisces

Neptune retrograde is usually a time when foggy energy prevails, and we struggle with seeing things as they really are, thinking things through clearly, and being focused. Neptune rules intuition, so Neptune retrograde reminds us that we need to trust our intuition and forge a strong connection with it to get us through these times.

Since Neptune is the natural ruling planet for Pisces, these Neptune retrogrades in Pisces make the point even stronger. Develop stronger instincts and trust in yourself.

Jupiter Retrograde: July 28 – November 23, 2022

Starts at: 8 degrees Aries

Enters Pisces: October 28, 2022

Ends at: 28 degrees Pisces

Signs most impacted: Aries, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Pisces

This Jupiter retrograde starts in Aries, and Jupiter in Aries has kicked up energy in a big way. Aries loves to take action and take the initiative, and the ruler of Aries, Mars, tours Aries with Jupiter from May 24 to July 5 (before Jupiter retrograde), multiplying that energy.

While Jupiter is retrograde, this energy can slow down somewhat, and it may focus more on what we need to be creating on our own and what we need to be more receptive to taking. We don’t need to make everything happen of our own volition, and sometimes letting things come to us can work out better.

That may be the lesson for Jupiter retrograde in Aries, and we have to learn to distinguish between what we can control and what we shouldn’t try to.

Jupiter retrogrades back into Pisces on October 28, and back in Pisces, we can be much more in tune with intuition, imagination, and compassion. Energy slows way down from Aries, and we may want some quiet time to reflect, be introspective, and work on lingering karmic issues.

Chiron Retrograde: July 19 – December 22, 2022

Starts at: 16 degrees Aries

Ends at: 11 degrees Aries

Signs most impacted: Aries

Chiron rules our wounds and how we heal and grow, and Chiron retrograde is a period where we focus on blocks to healing and growth. We can be more introspective, reflective and look deeply within to understand.

In Aries, Chiron retrograde can focus on our identity, who we feel we are, and what we connect with on a personal level. Any blocks that have kept you from fully living as you really are may get your focus now.

Uranus Retrograde: August 24, 2022 – January 22, 2023

Starts at: 18 degrees Taurus

Ends at: 14 degrees Taurus

Signs most impacted: Taurus, Aquarius

With Uranus being the ruler of change, Uranus retrograde tends to be when changes slow down. This can help us to get used to changes we’ve experienced and prepare for new ones to come, but it can also make us restless and impatient if we can’t move forward with the change we want.

In Taurus, things can slow down regarding changes regarding what we value, what we respect, our own confidence, how we create stability and security, and financially. We can work on plans for changes coming out of it that are smarter.

Note that Uranus is also retrograde to start 2022! Until January 18, so we have some of this effect going into 2022 as well.

Mercury Retrograde: September 9 – October 2, 2022

Starts at: 8 degrees Libra

Enters Virgo: September 23, 2022

Ends at: 24 degrees Virgo

Signs most impacted: Gemini, Virgo, Libra

This is the last Mercury retrograde for some years to impact Libra, so we can focus on relationship issues that need to be addressed. There can be a lot of reflecting on changes in our relationships, partnerships, and connections that occurred over the last few years.

This can be a good time to reconcile and compromise and to come back together on the same page. Sort through issues that have prevented peace and diplomacy from prevailing over the last few years and make it happen now.

Mercury retrogrades into Virgo on September 23, and Virgo is one of the signs Mercury naturally rules. This means stress gets kicked up in a big way, and we’ve got way too much on our plates.

We’re likely taking on too much work, too many projects, adding more and more to our list of things to do, and it just stresses us out. We need to do the routine maintenance in our lives, and that includes of ourselves.

Take time to relax, and try not to fill up the schedule to the max. Leave room for rest or to just goof off.

The retrograde ends trine Pluto in Capricorn, so this helps greatly with taking control, finding personal power, and transforming for the better. We can find solutions and move on.

Mars Retrograde: October 30, 2022 – January 12, 2023

Starts at: 25 degrees Gemini

Ends at: 8 degrees Gemini

Signs most impacted: Aries, Gemini

Mars retrograde pays us a visit to close the last 2 months of 2022 and start 2023, and this entire Mars retrograde occurs in Gemini. Mars retrogrades like to bring out frustrations, and we’re more easily provoked, and in Gemini, that can mean with our words.

Communication can be extra, extra, extra difficult, and we’re reading into things way too much. At the same time, some people may purposefully (or subconsciously) be trying to push our buttons by what they say, and we have to keep calm and not give in.

We may all need to count to 10 a LOT during this Mars retrograde before reacting or speaking. Choose your words carefully and mindfully.

This can be a good period for picking back up old ideas and plans and giving them a quick shot of life. If they can be accomplished fast, it can be wrapped up during the retrograde.

With Gemini ruling the mind, we likely need to give our minds plenty to focus on while also giving it plenty of time to rest. A balance needs to be struck between the two because if we don’t keep busy enough, we can become restless, and if we’re too busy, we can become anxious.

The retrograde starts with Mars square Neptune in Pisces, and this is in effect until December. The fog gets much stronger and infiltrates our minds, and we have to fight hard to make sure we see things clearly.

Something big and important may come to light that has been hidden for some time, and we need to stay cool as we deal with it. But it may be harder to get through to us because we’re kind of deluding ourselves thanks to Neptune and won’t see the full extent of it all until this passes.

Ground yourself as much as you can to try and avoid that happening to you!

Mercury Retrograde: December 29, 2022 – January 18, 2023

Starts at: 24 degrees Capricorn

Ends at: 8 degrees Capricorn

Signs most impacted: Aries, Gemini

The final Mercury retrograde for 2022 starts right at the end of the year and comes entirely in Capricorn. Usually, we’re focused on new goals and a new direction with a new year, but it’s interesting that both 2022 and 2023 start with a retrograde in Capricorn, so we’re likely more focused on OLD goals.

Instead of brand new resolutions, you may want to focus on some old ones you had and didn’t get to see through or even try. This is good second chance energy for that.

New goals may get put aside for a little while, or you may have to take a different approach than you initially thought you would, or it may turn out differently from what you thought. Flexibility becomes important.

With Mars also retrograde, this adds to the second chance energy, but also to more potential problems. We’ll definitely need to be extra careful to close out 2022!
